Fresh Cut Tulips – Care Tips

Taking care of fresh cut tulips properly can help prolong their vase life and keep them looking beautiful. Here are some tips for caring for fresh cut tulips:

  1. Preparation: Upon receiving the tulips, trim the stems 90* angle using sharp, clean scissors or floral shears. This helps create a fresh surface area for water absorption. Remove any foliage that will be below the waterline in the vase to prevent bacterial growth.

  2. Vase Selection: Choose a clean vase that is tall enough to support the tulip stems without crowding them. Fill the vase with room temperature water, as tulips are sensitive to cold temperatures. Add floral preservative to the water according to the package instructions to help nourish the flowers and prolong their vase life.

  3. Placement: Place the vase of tulips in a cool location away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and drafts. Avoid placing them near ripening fruits, as the ethylene gas produced by fruits can accelerate the aging process of flowers.

  4. Watering: Check the water level in the vase daily and top up with fresh water as needed to keep the stems submerged. Tulips are heavy drinkers and require plenty of water to stay hydrated. Replace the water every two to three days to prevent bacterial growth and keep it fresh.

  5. Maintenance: Recut the stems every few days to ensure they can continue to take up water effectively.

  6. Avoiding Ethylene Exposure: As mentioned earlier, ethylene gas can hasten the aging process of tulips and other flowers. Keep tulips away from sources of ethylene, such as cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes, and household cleaners.

By following these care tips, you can help ensure that your fresh cut tulips remain vibrant and beautiful for as long as possible, allowing you to enjoy their beauty indoors.
